PNG welcomes influx of SI students in their universities

One of the issues discuss during the Solomon Islands/PNG Bilateral discussions in Gizo last week was education and training.

Solomon Islands High Commissioner to Papua New Guinea Bernard Bata’anisia said PNG has assured Solomon Islands that it is welcomed to send its students to study at the various tertiary institutions.

“Over the years the number of our students studying in PNG institutions has increased,” Mr Bata’anisia said.

He said “last year, there were about 148 students studying in PNG and this year 2010, has seen an increase number of students to almost 290.

He said the various institutions Solomon Islands students are studying in, are UPNG, UNITECH, Divine Word, Pacific Adventist University, University of Natural resources and environment (Vudal), University of Goroka and PNG Maritime college in Madang.

The High Commissioner said Solomon Islands at the meeting conveyed its sincere thanks and appreciation to the government of PNG for supporting the training of Solomon Islands students studying in PNG.

“This year about 290 SI students were sponsored under the PNG government education grant assistance to the Solomon Islands.
