SICA speaks against suicide attempts

THE Solomon Islands Christian Association (SICA) has called on churches to take strong stand against suicide in the communities.

This came after a man in Western province died after he burnt himself alive with a petrol last month.

And another man in the same province was saved from death after he drank petrol and was currently in critical condition at Gizo hospital.

And this week two female high school students of Pawa Community High School in Makira Province are in stable condition after jumping off a 20-meter Banyan tree at the school grounds on separate incidents.

These cases were related to suicide and attempted suicide.

SICA General Secretary, James Funa said churches need to come out strong and tell congregation about the value of life.

He understands suicide is a personal decision but people needs to be reminded about this value of life which God gave to human kinds.

"People should not just take their lives when come to a point where they can't make decisions.

"They should discuss their problems with other people or see counsellors to solve their problems rather than taking their lives out," he said.

Mr Funa said life if given by God and people should make second thought before doing anything about it.

As such, Funa said churches should continue to remind congregation and communities about the value of life and people need to take heed of it as well.

The Solomon Islands Christian Association (SICA) is an ecumenical Christian non-governmental organisation in the country.

The association comprises the five largest Christian churches in the country, the Anglican Church of Melanesia, the Roman Catholic Church, the South Seas Evangelical Church, the Seventh Day Adventist Church, and the United Church.
