RNZI: An Amnesty International Australia researcher says major changes are needed immediately at the Australian run detention camp for asylum seekers on Nauru.
Alex Pagliaro was one of two researchers who this week visited the camp where 387 male asylum seekers are crammed into leaky tents in a very hot environment.
She says it is a recipe for disaster.
Amnesty says there must be immediate improvements in health assessments and the accommodation provided, and cultural awareness training given to staff.
Ms Pagliaro says ideally in meetings next week with the government they would like to push for the camp to be shut down.
“It is at least important that they understand exactly what is happening in Nauru especially as the majority have not been there and seen it for themselves and you know I think this is the beginning of a long process to getting politicians as well as many people in Australia to change their minds about this issue.”
