Safety fears stop flights along PNG's Kokoda Track

Safety concerns have prompted the Australian government and Airlines PNG to suspend subsidised flights to villages along Papua New Guinea's Kokoda Track.

The airline has assessed the landing strips at four villages along the track and hasn't been able to guarantee they are safe.

Flights to Kokoda are not affected.

Last year the government provided $US135,000 for Airlines PNG to fly a weekly service to the villages to stimulate economic development.

AusAID says the flights will be suspended until the Australian and PNG governments can assess the safety risks of flying to the area.--radio australia
