French Polynesia’s pro-independence leader, Oscar Temaru, says the chair of the UN Decolonisation Committee will take the Maohi people’s case to the UN secretary-general, Ban Ki-moon.
The committee’s chair, Dr Donatus St. Aimee, met Mr Temaru at a dinner organised by New Caledonia’s FLNKS movement after Mr Temaru was banned from joining the Noumea talks as he lacked a formal invitation.
France took French Polynesia off the UN decolonisation list in 1947 but allowed New Caledonia to be re-enlisted after the unrest of the 1980s.
Mr Temaru says he had a three-hour meeting with Dr St Aimee.
“He gave us information to send our envelope to the general-secretary of the United Nation, Ban Ki-moon - a very historical moment.”
The decolonistaion list includes American Samoa, Guam, New Caledonia, Pitcairn and Tokelau.--rnzi
