THE Asian Development Bank has announced a new programme to help Pacific Island countries cope with the global financial crisis.
The programme aims to cater to the needs of ministers of finance as they face up to the rapidly changing conditions of the global financial crisis. The Asian Development Bank's chief Pacific economist, Craig Sugden, says the programme will offer top-flight experts as mentors.
"The idea of using mentors is a bit of a change in direction for us," he says.
"In the past, we've provided a lot of support at technical level and perhaps we haven't paid enough attention to the needs of the key decision-makers."
Countries most at risk from the global financial crisis -such as Solomon Islands, Fiji and tourism- and remittance-based economies will get top priority.
A new up to date data service will be launched, along with a program to harness the ideas of the business and community sector.
