NZHerald: The Hawke's Bay area has been struck by a magnitude-5.3 earthquake this afternoon.

The quake occurred 10 km south-east of Porangahau at a depth of 20 km at 4.18pm.

There are no reports of damage yet although minor damage is possible around the epicentre, said Civil Defence.

Jeremy from the Duke of Edinburgh Hotel in Porangahau said this afternoon's earthquake lasted about 10 seconds and was the most violent one he had felt.

He told nzherald.co.nz he had not fully assessed the damage to the pub but had to clean up glasses that had smashed.

Meanwhile, a Hastings police spokesman told NZPA: "I was on the third floor and I can tell you it was rocking."

The earthquake was felt around the Hawke's Bay and as far as Massey University in Palmerston North.

Tremors were also reported on Mt Taranaki.
