The Royal Orchid Sheraton Hotel & Towers will be home for the Solomon Islands national futsal team, Kurukuru, for the next 2 weeks as the FIFA 2012 Futsal World Cup gets ready to kickoff in Thailand.
The Kurukuru arrived in Thailand last week and were accommodated at the Golden Tulip Hotel, also in Bangkok. This morning, however, the team was transferred into its official accommodation for the world cup which is closer to both the training venue and the match venue.
For members of the team arriving at the official accommodation marked a significant milestone. After having left Solomon Islands 3 weeks ago it is a great relief for the team to finally settle down and get over the feeling that they are still travelling.
Team manager, Mapuru Tausinga, says that the players and officials settled down well and the transition from travelling to setting camp up was smooth.
“After a lot of travelling in the last couple of weeks everyone is happy that we are now in our official home for the world cup. It is quite significant because we now reach the point where the next thing to come is the world cup itself,” Tausinga said.
“The journey was tough for the players and the management is so pleased to bring them to this point safely – now we can fully focus in the task at hand. Everyone from now has to go into world cup mode both players and officials.”
Tausinga also thanked supporters of the team and families back in Solomon Islands and called for national unity behind Kurukuru.
“We want to thank everyone back home for the moral support and prayers that we have received so far. This is now the most important period of our campaign and we ask the whole of Solomon Islands to be with us each step of the way,” Tausinga appealed.
The Kurukuru’s first game in the FIFA Futsal World Cup is against Russia on Saturday 3 November. Next in their schedule for the world cup is Colombia whom they will play on Tuesday 6 November. Their last pool match is against Guatemala on Friday 9 November.
The Royal Orchid Sheraton Hotel & Towers is a 5 star luxury hotel on the banks of Chao Phraya River, one of Thailand’s busiest waterways. The hotel has more than 700 rooms and currently houses 8 of the teams participating in the futsal world cup including Russia, Kuwait, Colombia and Guatemala.
