HIV awareness through sports

 SEVEN primary schools in town have participated in a sport fun day yesterday at SDA Marathana hall, east Honiara. 


The event is organized by the Adventist Development Relief Agency (ADRA) under ADRA HIV school component project awareness through sport.

HIV school component project coordinator, Joe Lovi said the sport day is part of educational awareness that involves various games to be played.

Lovi said schools are put into colours to identify what color they are playing under throughout the event.

“Those who are involved are grade 4, 5 and 6 that we are working close with and assisting.  The sport day involves two parts that include sport and educational awareness”, said Lovi.

Lovi said the program is significant that base under the project to help students in lower grades understands the effects of the killer disease.

He pointed the phase one of the project will end this month as the new phase will begin in June as ten schools will be identify under the project.

Lovi confirms three components of the project that include church, livelihood and school components.

Education permanent secretary Mylin Kuve explains during the opening of the sport day that it is important for students to understand the causes and effects of HIV and standout in our education system.

Mrs Kuve added that under the education curriculum development centre has put in place the subject health for primary and secondary schools.  

Sports that were played during the day include soccer, tag-war, volleyball, spoon-race and sack-race.
