THE Queen’s Baton will arrive in the country today, the 53rd country, since the beginning of its journey October 29th 2009.
The baton will arrive in the country from Vanuatu at 11am.
Four Commonwealth officials will be accompanying the Queen’s Baton which will be received by the Governor General Sir Frank Kabui at the Henderson International Airport on behalf of the people and government of Solomon Islands.
Chief Executive Officer of the National Olympic Committee Atu Balekana said the Queens baton from the airport will rest at Governor General’s residence before making its way to the United Church for an official thanksgiving mass which will begin at 6pm today.
The thanksgiving service is organised by the Ministry of Home Affairs, Solomon Islands Christian Association and will be attended by the Governor General Sir Frank Kabui, Prime Minister Dr Derek Sikua and other dignitaries.
During the ceremony ,as the head of state the Governor General will officially hand over the Queens baton to the Prime Minister in which Dr Sikua will then hand it over to NOCSI.
Then from tomorrow Wednesday 28 to Friday 30 the baton will be carried by members of our Team Solomon and will begin its journey around Honiara visiting schools starting from St Josephs Tenaru to Marara, West Guadalcanal.
On Wednesday 28 the journey begins from Tenaru down to Zion school.
On Thursday 29 the baton relay will continue from Florence Young Christian School and ends at Tuvaruhu School.
Then on Friday 30 it will continue from Mbokonavera and finishes at Marara School.
From Marara School business houses namely Solbrew, Solair, and DJ Graphics to name a few will be bringing the baton back to town.
Balekana said the baton would also be visiting sporting venues like Lawson Tama soccer field and netball courts and the golf course on Saturday.
Then on Sunday the queen’s baton will make its final visit to Rove Prison Service.
The baton then leaves the country at 1am on Monday morning for Nauru.
