Mum who fall in love with basketball

What  would you say about a fulltime working mum who even spare her time to be in the basketball court after every working hours to play the sport she love. Quite often you wouldn’t find mothers spending an hour or so of their time after work to train and relax with team mates and friends playing sports.

In our Melanesian culture we could hardly find women involved in sports because women were meant to be at home, do the house work, looking after the kids and prepare food on the table for the family.

But does life has to be like that? Here is a good example for mothers and of course fathers to have the understanding and trust for their wives.

Debbie Sade is a loving mother of two who loved to play basket ball after she realized her potential and interest in that sport. She started playing the sport when she was at high school at Betikama Adventist School in 1983.

Ms Sade found the game very interesting because it helps her to quickly think and make good decisions.

“Playing the game is nice” she said.

She loved the game so much that even when she went overseas to do her tertiary studies, she continues to play during her spare times.

After finishing her studies she came back home and continue playing with some of the teams in town. She helped the Heli Solomon’s basketball team to win the basketball championship in 1993.

She got married in 1994. But that doesn’t stop her from playing. In 1995 she was selected into the women’s basketball squad to represent the country in Tahiti for the South Pacific Games. However she pulled out after letting her coach know later that she was expecting her first child. Her coach was really surprised because he did not even realize that. That was sad news as she would love to be part of the team.

In 1999 she helped Telekom basketball team won another championship. To add much flavor to her resume she added another championship title to her name after helping her team, Roberto Roses win another championship in 2001.

In 2008 she was called to join Defenders basketball team. Together with the help of Lysa Wini and Don Boykin, they tried to put together a group of young talented girls to show case their skills in basketball. The trainings continued through to 2009.

In 2009 her youngest daughter, Ruth got into playing basketball as well. With the help of her dad, Wilfred Sade, Trainer/mentor, junior Gwali and Don Boykin, Coach Ruth was also becoming a good basketball player and is part of the Defenders development team.

Mrs Sade said some of the challenges faced during her time in the sports were Poor attendance to trainings which did not help at all when you want to learn something and others did not turn up and trying to manage time with family, work and sports.

She would like to advice all women to come out and involve in playing basketball. If you are interested they can help you with basic basketball skills at Woodford School.

She encourages other women to be active in sport because it helps people to stay fit and healthy.

It enables you to socialize with other women, to share ideas and help one another with issues affecting women.

It is a place where you could build your networking skills by interacting with women of different backgrounds.

She also wants to encourage interested girls and women who want to join Defenders basketball team to feel free to join the team.

She wants all fathers to look at the positive side of sport and allow their women to involve in sport, not to keep them like prisoners at home.

Debbie Sade is a very loving mother who is very committed to her family, work, and sport.

She has been a full time employer at the New Zealand High Commission office since September 12 1996. She is forty years of age now but still takes an active role playing basketball and training the youths.

She wants to wish all the women in the country a “HAPPY MOTHERS DAY”
