The Solomon Islands Football Federation (SIFF) announced today that the local members of the Solomon Islands Senior National Team will play a team of Solomon Islanders playing for overseas clubs this Saturday.
The match will mark the opening of the 2010 Our Telekom National Club Championship besides giving national coaches an opportunity to assess the players.
It will kick off at 4:00pm at Lawson Tama as soon as the formal opening ceremony of the Our Telekom National Club Championship is completed.
SIFF organized the match after arrangements with the Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) to bring in an international team could not be confirmed in time for the May 15 date.
The original plan was for the Solomon Islands Senior National Team to play either the OFC All Stars or New Caledonia in a Charity Match to assist Goldie College National Secondary School.
SIFF General Secretary, Eddie Ngava, said that SIFF decided as an alternative for locally based players to play Solomon Islanders are playing for overseas clubs including Hekari United in Papua New Guinea and Amicale of Vanuatu.
Ngava further outlined that 3 locals v. internationals matches are planned. The other 2 will be held later this year. The dates are yet to be confirmed.
The objectives of such matches are to firstly raise funds for charity projects undertaken by SIFF and secondly to provide international matches. The final objective is for the matches to be used as additional trials which overseas based players can be tested against local based players to come up with the final squad.
Members of the Solomon Islands Overseas Based Players are called to attend an important meeting on Tuesday May 11 at Lawson Tama at 4:00pm.
The meeting will be used to confirm training sessions for the team and the final listing.
