The volunteers who have helped in cooking, providing medal assistance for athletes and have helped during the Games claimed it has been two weeks now but they have yet to receive a penny.
One of the workers Steve Wakio called star sports from Auki yesterday and complained that MOC promised them that they would be paid but nothing was forthcoming.
He said when they approached MOC for their allowance they were told to wait.
“We have been promised to be paid and MOC lied to us”, Wakio said.
Wakio said MOC promised to pay them through the ANZ bank in Auki but the bank denied any knowledge of any payments paid through them.
However, when star sports contacted MOC in Auki they denied that they have made an agreement with volunteers to be paid at the end of the Games.
MOC spokesman Ronnie Butala stressed that such people who have complained about being paid are opportunists who wanted to make money out of something one should have done it for free with a good heart.
“All of us are not paid because we agreed to be volunteers. Such people should be ashamed of themselves because the Solomon Games was a time people of Malaita showed case their hospitality and tradition helping athletes and they should be proud and not doing things and asking money in return”, Butala said.
Butala urged those who have complained to discuss the issue with MOC rather than going to the media.
