THE National Olympic Committee of Solomon Islands has confirmed 11th August as the date of departure for athletes and officials attending the Youth Olympics in Singapore.

Solomon Islands will lead an eight member delegation consisting of four athletes and four technical officials to Singapore for the Youth Olympics next month.

The eight member delegation were supposed to depart yesterday but their visas and arrangements were still in process.

The team officials are as follows;
  • Chef De Mission: Morris Maetaki
  • Team Manager: Atu Balekana
  • Trainer: yet to be confirmed
  • Business Guest: Allan Castro (Lily’s Clothing)
NOCSI explained the business guest representative as the contingent’s major sponsor funding all uniforms for the athletes.

As for the four athletes they will represent the country in three sports namely Weightlifting, Wrestling and Athletics.

Two athletes will represent athletics, one for weightlifting and one for wrestling.

The athletes are:
  • Athletics: Noelyn Kukapi, Stanley Sipolo

  • Weightlifting: Hapilyn Iro

  • Wrestling: Meia Peia

NOCSI Chief Executive Officer Atu Balekana said they are planning to spend two or three weeks in a sports camp in Fiji before taking off for Australia and then to Singapore.

“Fiji has confirmed and accepted us for the proposed camp before leaving for Singapore but we are still waiting for our Australian visas, “he said.

Balekana said if the visa process is slower than expected then they have to switch to plan B which will see them heading straight for Singapore through Australia without camping in Fiji.

The route will be from Honiara to Brisbane to Melbourne and then straight to Singapore.
