BOXING Fiji is expected to send a strong team to the Mini South Pacific Games in the Cook Islands this month.

Fiji amateur boxing coach Marika Yalimaiwai made the comment after returning on Tuesday from a tour to Kiribati.

Yalimaiwai said the seven-member Fiji team had mixed results in their first outing but on the second day lost only fight.

Yalimaiwai said all fighters showed during the two-day tournament in Tarawa they were competing for a place in Mini Games team.

"All fighters who went on this trip gave their best as they know this trip was part of our trials for the Mini Games," Yalimaiwai said.

"We had learnt a lot from our first outing against the Kiribati national team and on the second day we managed to win all our fights except for one."

Yalimaiwai said Fiji-based heavyweight Teuane Ru'uata was the only successful Kiribati fighter on the second day of competition, beating Viliame Rayawa.

Yalimaiwai said Fiji Boxing would send a four-member team to the Cooks.

Boxing Fiji secretary Paula Raqeukai said the team to the Mini Games would be selected this week.

"We believe we are going to select a very strong team to represent us to the Mini Games because all our fighters have been following very strict training programs," Raqeukai said. – Fiji Times
