“The boys started training last week at the Amini Park nets in preparation for the August World Cup,” Garamut coach John Ovia said.
They have been undergoing training under the
watchful eyes of players from the national men’s team – Hebou Baramundis – to
help the young players fine tune their batting, bowling and fielding skills.
From the 22 talented hopefuls, only 14 players
will be flying down under.
However, their mentor is praying that the PNG
Cricket Board to give him one more player.
“The board said 14 boys will be selected, but I
hope I get 15 players like last year,” Ovia said referring to the squad he was
given for the World Cup qualifiers last year.
According to Ovia, the final squad will be
announced when PNG Cricket chief executive officer Greg Campbell, who is
currently overseas, arrives back in the country.
Meanwhile, the 2011 SP coach of the year could not
give his boys lead up tournament they will be participating in because the
cricket office has yet to release its 2012 calendar.
Garamuts success at the bi-annual tournament will be laid on the shoulder of captain Chris Kent, Sese Bau, Vagi Oala and Charles Amini Jr who feature prominently in the cup qualifiers last year.
