Fijilive - Eddie Waqa has been confirmed as the coach for the Digicel Fiji 7s team to the Wellington and Las Vegas 7s and Semi Rogoyawa as team manager.

The duo was in charge of the team when Fiji claimed victory in the inaugural tournament of the 2011/12 HSBC Sevens World Series, the Gold Coast 7s last November.

Waqa will lead the side to the Wellington and Las Vegas 7s with 7s head coach, Alivereti Dere, a former Fiji 7s captain and winner in Hong Kong, taking over for the Hong Kong and Japan 7s.

“Obviously we’d like to win all remaining tournaments, however if there’s one tournament that always stands out it’s the Hong Kong 7s and Dere will lead the team to Hong and then to the new inclusion in the World Series – the Japan 7s,” FRU chief executive officer, Manasa Baravilala said.

Baravilala added the selection of Rogoyawa as manager was a hard decision to make.

“It’s a difficult situation as we’ve received a number of competent applicants for the team manager’s post after it was advertised in November,” Baravilala said.

“On behalf of the Board, we offer our sincere apologies in not being able to consider those from outside based on the reasons stated,” he added.

Fiji Rugby’s dire financial position forced the Board to utilise staff within FRU who had capable team management experience for the time being.

Rogoyawa will remain as team manager for both the Wellington and Las Vegas legs of the HSBC Sevens World Series.

“The Board has analyzed all aspects of the first three tournaments in the Series and there can be no argument against the need for persons to focus solely on one role, hence the need for a specific team manager and the need for a coach to focus specifically on coaching which is par for the course in this modern professional era,” Baravilala said.

The Wellington 7s kicks off on 3 February where Fiji is joint leader on 51 points with archrivals New Zealand on the Series points table.
