Moresby (The National) GULF province is seriously looking at having a team – Gulf Isapeas – in the next year’s prestigious bemobile Cup challenge.
Having already established the name as a company, Gulf Isapea Ltd, the company behind the province’s team received a financial boost last Friday with a K500,000 backing from the Gulf provincial government.
Speaking at the presentation of the funds, Gulf Governor Havila Kavo said: “The reason why the Gulf Isapea Ltd was formed and registered with Investment Promotion Authority last October was to see youths from the province get the opportunity to reach their ultimate goals in rugby league.
“My people have been denied opportunities for far too long and through windows like this, my people and young men can strive to be part of this great and historical honour,” Kavo said.
“We have sounded out our chances with the PNG National Rugby League board chairman Don Fox, who is quite receptive to our bid for 2011, urging us only to ‘get our house in order’ and bid for next year’s inclusion.
Isapea Ltd chairman Celsus Kose said the franchise would act as a business entity, firstly to put a team into the bemobile Cup and then strive to empower the people with avenues and strategies to put money in their pockets for registration, purchase of playing gear and fees for watching and playing games.
“We are taking up a challenge – one that should minimise the New Guinea dominance of the game at the national level and we look forward to a successful bid in next season and beyond,” he added.
The Gulf Isapeas Ltd has a seven-man board appointed by Kavo, comprising some of the best Gulf province brains in public administration, media, sports law and finance.
The directors are Kose (chairman), Jamuga Stone (vice-president), Jack Metta (secretary/CEO), Lausi Mearaveka (treasurer), Martin Liri, Sarea Soi and Soroi Eoe.
