Equality opportunity to our teachers

Teachers play a critical role towards the achievement of the Education for All (EFA) goal on gender equity.

In many developing countries there is a shortage of female teachers, particularly at secondary and tertiary levels and in the subjects of science and maths.

Capacity development and awareness-raising are essential to empower women teachers to be both effective practitioners and gender advocates.

Solomon Islands Government with the support of UNESCO continues to work hard to support gender equity in education, in terms of access and achievement through partnership with key organizations, research and production of guidelines and policy briefs.

And we should acknowledged both parties for their recognition,.

Celebrating the world teachers day this year with the theme “Teacher for Gender equality,” should remind teachers and the country that in order to achieve Education for All and the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) the gender dimension of teaching must receive particular attention beginning with girls’ access to school.

For examples in many regions a low portion of female teachers will mean fewer girls at school and consequently even fewer women teachers in the future.

As highlighted during the celebration day, if we want to give equal opportunities for women to realize their full potential and claim their rights, we must devise policies and strategies that attract and motivated capable women and men to teach, while also enabling them to create gender-equal learning environments.

This work is based on a two-pronged approach involving both gender-specific programmes and gender mainstreaming within UNESCO’s five areas of competence (Education; Natural Sciences; Social and Human Sciences; Culture; and Communication and Information).

There is no doubt our government have recognised the importance of having equal opportunity for both male and female in the teaching industry in this country.

Because they have continued to play an important role in educating our children.

It’s a challenge though when our education system is being dominated by male or female.

But having equal opportunity for genders in the teaching industry contributes well to the learning of the children and the society which we lived in.

In the meantime we also acknowledge our teachers for their services to this country over the years, now and the years to come.

Keep the up the good work.
