Breast cancer is a major global public health problem. It is the most commonly diagnosed cancer and one of the leading causes of cancer deaths in women worldwide.
And in Solomon Islands it is the second leading cancer problem which affected local women.
It’s a problem which continues to affect our sisters and mothers and its not at all exciting news.
Breast cancer is a public health threat to our nation and the incidence rate is probably increasing.
It has been found that women often present with breast cancer at advanced stages.
Early detection of breast cancer is an important prognostic fact, and breast cancer screening has been found successful in decreasing mortality rates.
The percentage of women engaging in screening
activities is alarmingly low.
We acknowledged those who are working to raise awareness among our local women.
That is for their mission and vision to raise the awareness of breast cancer to all our local women and to use that awareness to aid in the prevention, early detection and treatment of breast cancer.
We must also acknowledge the First Lady Charity
which strives to provide resources and support to women throughout the country by
connecting them with essential resources that will lead to proper medical
treatment, support and humanitarian services that will ensure each woman is
treated with the utmost respect and dignity regardless of race, creed,
nationality or position.
The First Lady Charity group is trying to get a mammogram equipment to allow for the early detection of breast cancer in the country.
This is a very excellent initiative.
Such an equipment is very expensive. Thus, financial assistance will be required.
Those who attended the dinner over the weekend have contributed to a good cause.
In some parts of the world the chance of dying from breast cancer is about one in 36. Breast cancer death rates have been going down.
This is of early detection and better treatment.
There are breast cancer survivors in the country and this should be an encouragement for our women.
They should regularly seek medical seek inorder to avoid the disease developing into critical stage.
As a nation we must continue to support such an initiative and the fight to reduce breast cancer in our country.
