NEWS of the arrest of at least four of a known gang that has been terrorising residents of east Honiara in past weeks is a welcome relief.
This group does not give a dump to its victims. They were known to have robbed a number of public buses in the Burns Creek area in broad daylight.
They’ve attacked security guards manning a public school and the Taiwanese Agriculture Technical Mission at King George.
And steal valuables from these properties.
They would turn up at local residences wearing masks and armed with knives, stones, sticks and irons, threatening people while they robbed them.
These young men pose a real threat to our communities.
The arrest of the four is definitely going to be welcomed by the community. Police, with the help of the community, must continue to seek members of the gang who are still at large.
They must not be allowed to freely roam our communities.
And with the four now in police custody, the courts must consider the threat these young men pose to the community.
To release them on bail after a few weeks in custody, as was a number of previous cases, would be the worst thing to do.
Because the moment they were released and out of police sight, they are likely to strike again.
It had happened before so it’s time the courts played their role in protecting the welfare and safety of the community from such people.
Meanwhile, Operation ROBCID must not stop with the arrest of the four. It must continue.
A message must be sent to these criminals that the police and community will not tolerate their action.
And that if they continue to terrorise innocent members of the public, the police will get them no matter how long and difficult it may be.
Well done officers.
