LET’S welcome Telecommunications Commissioner Nick Williams to the Solomons.
His job as telecommunications commissioner is such an important one.
He will ensure any competition in the telecommunication industry is played on a level playing ground.
The Government recently opened the telecommunications industry for competition.
This saw Papua New Guinea-based mobile phone operator bemobile, entering the country.
In a year’s time, we may be seeing another operator entering the market.
And in future there may be more operators coming here.
In such situation, there’s need for an independent body to keep an eye on the operators and how they do their business.
This is exactly what Mr Williams is here to do.
He’ll ensure there is fair competition amongst operators.
He’ll ensure competitors play by the rules.
He’ll ensure there’s no price-fixing by operators.
So yes, Mr Williams has an important role to play here.
He’s our watchdog in the telecommunications sector.
Mr Williams is an expert in this field. He’s someone who knows the knitty-gritties of the telecommunications sector.
He has worked in Africa, Europe and other parts of the world doing this sort of job.
So we can be sure the Government has got the right man.
In the meantime, let’s embrace the competition now here.
We can be assured there is someone out there who will ensure there is fair competition and that the public is not ripped off by unscrupulous operators.
Welcome to Solomon Islands, Mr Williams!
