WE are again privileged to have an Interplast team from Australia who is here to offer free specialist surgical operations.

Let’s welcome and thank them for coming here once more.

Doctors who previously came under similar missions have left a positive legacy in the lives of many Solomon Islanders.

These are specialist doctors who are giving their time and skills free for the service of those who may otherwise never have the chance to see a doctor.

Interplast Australia & New Zealand provides surgical and allied health services in developing countries in the Asia Pacific region by providing free medical treatment and training.

Each member of an Interplast programme is fully qualified in their field of expertise and volunteer their time to participate in the programme.

Interplast volunteers provide free treatment to people living with a disability from a congenital condition such as cleft lip and palate, or an acquired condition such as burn scar contractures.

Treatment is targeted to the indigent population who would otherwise not be able to afford to access services.

They also assist with developing local capacity to provide surgery and ancillary services by providing training and mentoring programmes for medical and allied health professionals.

In fact all Interplast programs are training programs – leaving a legacy long after the team has gone.

The current interplast visit will last two weeks.

The team will also visit some of the provinces.

Its members specialised in reconstruction of deformity to the face and body as well as severe burns.

Those who have any of these conditions will have the chance to see the team.

So let’s make full use of this once in a while opportunity.

You never know.

This may be your chance to get your medical condition fixed.
