Competition in the telecommunication industry is here.
It came with the launch of bemobile’s operations yesterday.
For so long, we have been forced to succumb to Our Telekom’s monopoly.
Expensive, unreliable, and substandard were the features of the industry then.
But this all changed when the outgoing Sikua government opened up the telecommunications industry last year through an act of parliament.
The move forced Our Telekom to lift its game and bring its system up to the latest international standard.
Then came bemobile, a little-known subsidiary of Telikom PNG. Since it was issued its business licence early this year, bemobile had worked around the clock to meet its deadline.
It was required to have the service operating with 25 percent population coverage by 18 June this year.
bemobile failed and was slapped with a $US1.5 million fine by the Telecommunications Commission.
The company bounced back and was able to meet its second deadline yesterday, fending off another possible hefty fine.
So we now have two mobile phone operators competing on equal terms, and both operating 3G network systems.
We’ve seen prices of mobile phone hand-sets slashed down yesterday, sim cards being given away for free, and other specials from both companies.
That’s what competition brings.
Let’s embrace the moment and say to both companies: Bring them on
