Dear Editor - May I voice out my humble opinion on this very important issue.
Since last week, the Asylum issue had been making the headlines both domestically and internationally. The intentions of our Prime Minister in establishing an Asylum center on Stirling Island in the Shortland Islands is very shameful, immature and absolutely selfish.
And just recently the premier of Western province and his government rallied their support behind our Prime Minister’s resolute.
The reasons stated were similar to our Prime Minister’s motives.
But this is politics and to rob our people off by saying it is best for the country in terms of national security and economic benefits is outrageous.
One thing the Prime Minister and Premier of Western Province should consider is that the border issue has been with us since post-independence. This leaves me with this question. Is this done in the name of regionalism or the interest of the whole country?
The caliber to solve this lies inside our sovereignty and not outside our reach which if undertaken will question our sovereignty and statehood.
Instead proper training programs should be done with our respective law enforcers in seeing that they have the best training and the latest surveillance equipments to help monitor our border. Also our country is richly blessed with abundant resources and our government should continue to persist and make dialogues with our respective land owners. It might take years but it is us the good citizens, the land owners, the people who have the power to allow development and not some white fella polices which will determine our economic destiny. Enough is enough.
In this I wish to make a call to my good fellow citizens of Solomon Islands that let us not sway to the interest of one man and a minority group who are trying to disguise their own egotistical interest in the good name of national interest. We already have our own fair share of domestic problems and to bring in another load of dilemma is not at all in the national interest of the country. At this sort of times our unity is very much important and I pray that all Solomon Islanders will continue to stand tall amidst this recent issue. Long live Solomon Islands.
