No case against PM

Dear Editor - I'd like  to put on record as the Acting Police Commissioner that it is not true and misleading to say that I have cleared the Honourable Prime Minister’s case regarding the tsunami funds and that police have not investigated the bech-de-mer case as was raised by some people in the Solomon Star.

The article concerned contained serious and unsubstantiated allegations and it is unfortunate that such imbalanced speculations by an individual were highlighted by the reporter without verification which is not helpful to anyone at all.

On page 3 of your newspaper of Friday 6 January 2012, an article with the title ‘MMF questions chancery investigation committee’ published fabricated and misleading information which I am compelled to respond to.

I state clearly here that police have not received any formal report against the Honourable Prime Minister regarding the tsunami funds.  It is therefore incorrect and misleading to say that police have cleared the tsunami fund case as there has never been any such incident reported to police.

The only matter related to the Hon Prime Minister that was reported to Police was the awarding of contract for the cleanup of Gizo Township after the tsunami. This matter was fully investigated by police and it was established that the contract was awarded through cabinet and nothing to substantiate any criminal proceedings.

The other allegation by Mr William Gua regarding the bech-de-mer case which was highlighted by your reporter is also incorrect and misleading.

The bech-de-mer case is a non issue for the police as the matter is now before the courts.

The incident was reported and investigated by Honiara City Criminal Investigation Department during which suspects were arrested and charged.

The accused in this matter are expected to appear in court for their second mention at approximately 9.00am on 30 January 2012.

I suggest that Mr Gua attend the court hearings to get accurate information regarding the bech-de-mer case and stop misleading the public.

Walter Kola
Acting Commissioner
