Soltai denies report of defective products

E-mail Print

DEAR EDITOR – I refer to the news report “Soltai denies reports of defective products”, which was published on this paper on Thursday 11th March 2010.

I was quite shocked to read that the Soltai’s boss denied the fact that NFD’s fish was not the reason for rejects on Soltai's finished products.

I want to remind the Soltai’s boss that in most cases, since 2003 when Soltai started processing NFD fish, the cases of rejects or quality problem on finished products have been mainly due to the quality issues associated with the NFD fish.

He just needs to look at the Cannery and QC reports on the fish acceptance for production for the past years to substantiate this claim.

The problem would have been initiated in the vessels’ freezing system, or handling of fish from the nets into vessels' freezers, or whatever, but the point here is that it started with the fish on board the vessels or during unloading to the cold store.

The cannery has never had such a quality problem with the Soltai's pole & line caught fish.

I would also like to stress strongly to the Soltai’s boss that since Soltai has stopped processing pole & line caught fish, the quality and taste of the canned tuna have gone from best to worse.

There have been many complaints about this on this very paper in the past; I am now putting mine forward publicly.

It is hard to say this but I am very embarrassed to say that the taste and quality of some of the imported canned tuna have out-performed our very owned canned tuna.

There was no such issue in taste and quality in the early years of Soltai or during Taiyo's time.

The taste and quality problem started as soon as the new management came into power and processing 100% of the fish in the cannery from NFD boats.

Would be logical then to state that the quality and taste issues could have come about from either the NFD fish or the new management style? Answa lo iu nao.

I was not surprised at all when the Soltai’s boss was diverting the blame from NFD fish in the news article, after all he and the other Soltai expatriate managers are employed by the same people who own NFD.

The many problems of Soltai too have not gone away as publicly envisaged when the new management took over.

In fact what was gathered from employees here at Noro and also by looking at the company operations now was that the company's problems have gone much deeper and getting worse.

It is a waste of time too contacting Soltai office complaining about the taste and quality of their products.

This is because there have been countless complaints made on this paper in the past but so far nothing has been done to improve the taste and the quality of our canned tuna.

Instead of addressing the issues frankly, the Soltai boss always goes into a defensive mood when responding to such claims in the media.

I trust that the Soltai’s boss and his management would immediately start doing what is important to Soltai's survival by fixing the canned tuna taste and quality issues and hopefully resolving the many problems now facing the company.
