DDP’s policy on NPF

E-mail Print

DEAR EDITOR – I read with a surprise from the article entitled “A return to basics – the only way to move forward” by Alfred Sasako, a veteran journalist and an aspiring candidate for this upcoming National election which appeared on Thursday 20 May 2010 Solomon Star issue No. 4240.

I therefore wish to clarify the ignorance.

The last three paragraphs of the veteran journalist’s article was confined Solomon Islands National provident Fund (SINPF) which the new political party – Direct Development Party (DDP) is emphasing in its launched manifesto the need to bring the non-formal employee/employer into the SINPF contribution scheme hence enjoy the retirement benefits by those formally employed.

I would advise the Executive of the DDP to refer to SINPF Act (CAP.109) section 18 (1) which describes the requirements for voluntary contributions from those in the informal sector i.e. self-employed, taxi drivers/conductors, betelnut sellers, etc.

Even the members of Parliament who are members of the Fund fall under this provision in SINPF Act.

In order words, the SINPF does accept the voluntary contributions from persons working in the informal sector in Solomon Islands if they so wish.

They will withdraw their accumulated contributions plus interests earned when retired.

Had the Executive of DDP made some reference to SINPF Act or contact management for that matter, they could have pick-up this relevant provision which takes care of their concern.
