Holy Cross' 450 yrs jubilee anniversary celebration this weekend

Catholic devotees throughout the archdiocese of Honiara will gather this weekend at Holy Cross Cathedral to mark the 450 years jubilee anniversary of the Holy Cross arrival in the country.

Leading up to the main event this Sunday 16th September, an official opening commenced on Monday to allow church activities to be held indoors of Holy Cross area in preparation for the main celebration.

Speaking at the official opening His Grace Archbishop Christopher Michael Cardone (OP) said “this evening (Monday) we gather here to officially begin our program to mark this 450 years anniversary of the cross arrival here in Solomon islands which we will celebrating on Sunday 16th September here at Holy cross cathedral.

“It is a blessing that we gather here to pray and share our loves together and prepare to participate in this great jubilee celebration,” he said.

He also gave a brief history about the arrival of Alvaro de Mendana in the country around 1568 and the planting of the Cross by the Spanish missionaries at Vatuliva Hill now known as the ‘Holy Cross’ hill.

Following the opening on Monday, celebrations continued Tuesday and Wednesday with sports activities.

A Mass by the Divine Mercy Ministry will be held tomorrow - Thursday and on Friday entertainment to be provided by the youths in their respective groups and parishes.

On Saturday 15th September a vigil Mass will conducted by the Couple for Christ (CFC) ministry and the enactment of the arrival of Mendana and Bishop Epalle. This will be dramatised by the AvuAvu and Bishop Epalle students’ drama group.

The day’s event will be closed with remarks from the Bishop Elect Bishop Peter Houhou.

On Sunday 16th September a high Mass will start with a re-enactment of the arrival of Mendana from the Yacht Club to Holy Cross Cathedral from 6:30 to 7am in the morning. This will be the highlight of the jubilee celebration.

The public is most welcome to join the celebration.

The Cross had been visiting parts of the country over the past months leading up to this week’s celebration.
