MEMBERS of the Catholic faith at Visale, northwest Guadalcanal, last week buried a sister who had served the church for over 55 years.

Sister Augustina Margarita Gesuna died at the mission station on 16 January 2020 at the age of 84.

She was born in 1934 at Ata’a village, Usu’usue Parish, northeast Malaita.

Gesuna came from a family of eight, four of whom have already passed on.

She began her church service as postulate on 6 June 1964 and entered novice on the same year on December 7.

On 8 December 1975, Gesuna made her perpetual vows at Visale Parish Mission Station to serve the church.

According to her brief obituary, during her Novitiate she attended Domestic Science at Tanagai from January-May in 1964 under SR. M. Rosalie.

Gesuna had spent most of her life serving the church in many parishes in Malaita and Guadalcanal.

She was also involved in catechetic work in the communities, especially for her family.

She was very devoted on the altar, making bread and giving care to priests and brothers.

Gesuna’s most recent assignment before her rest was at Tanagai, making altar breads from 2003-2007.

From 2008-2011 she was resting at Villa Maria community and was later assigned to the elderly retired house at Luavi in 2012-2020 where she died.

She had some standing qualities; she was a loving and simple and she was kind to children and elderly people.

The Catholic church thanked Gesuna for her service to the church and congregation for 55 years.
