AN estimated $2million was earned from beche-de-mer exports during the open season that closed at the end of January this year.

Under Secretary of the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources, Ferral Lasi revealed this to the Solomon Star in an exclusive interview on Wednesday.

He said, the beche-de-mer harvest season was open September last year and closed last month.

“However it does not generate much as we expected from what we earned from the exports.

“Close to nearly $2million was earned from the beche-de-mer r exported during the open season, in the last five months.”

He also revealed that the fisheries sector get more revenues from tuna but not beche-de-mer as some may think.

“Tuna accounts for huge amount of revenues generated from fisheries.”

And he said, the ministry is currently working on a policy to ensure locals benefit much from their fisheries resources, including beche-de-mer .

Mr Lasi finally stated that once the policy is completed and implemented then we expect our people to get more benefits from their marine resources.
