Fijian likely to be next police chief

18 June 2014

THE country’s next police commissioner is likely to be a Fijian, according to well-placed sources.

A Fijian was amongst the four shortlisted candidates interviewed for the top job. The others are two locals and an Australian.

One source close to the Police and Correctional Service Commission said the Fijian candidate was endorsed for the job.

And according to the source, the commission after receiving the interviewing panel’s decision endorsed the Fijian to the government (PMO).

It was further revealed that the commissioner’s endorsement should have been submitted already to the Prime Minister’s Office last week or early this week.

However, due to the death of the commission’s secretary last Thursday, it’s not confirmed whether the file has been submitted or not.

But another source said while the commission’s secretary was admitted in hospital, he has given instructions to his executive secretary to take the files from his office to deliver it to the Office of the Prime Minister.

The source further revealed that the members of the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force already knew of their new boss and have welcomed it.

Numerous calls to the PM’s press secretary for comments yesterday went unanswered.
