There were concerns that land around the Guadalcanal American Memorial was being encroached.

In addition to discussions with the Solomon Islands Government lands department on securing the land surrounding the memorial, the existing boundaries were surveyed before the agreement was signed.

Through the agreement, the ministry of lands approved the U.S. request for an extended boundary that includes a larger perimeter around the memorial.

American Battle Monuments Commissioner Larry Adkinson, U.S. Ambassador to Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, and Vanuatu Walter North, and U.S. Consular Agent Keithie Saunders signed on behalf of the U.S. government.

Acting Commissioner of Lands Nesta Maelanga, Lands Officer Urban Peter Buka, and Deputy Commissioner Lands Abel Viurusigned on behalf of the Solomon Islands ministry of lands.

“I sincerely appreciate the efforts of the Government of the Solomon Islands and its Ministry of Lands to secure the land around the Guadalcanal American Memorial.Their efforts ensure the memorial will be a lasting legacy for future generations and a fitting edifice for those who have so valiantly laid down their lives for freedom in World War II,” said U.S. Ambassador North.

The United States also thanks the people of Skyline Ridge who look out for the safety and security of the Memorial.
