02 August 2018

THE Solomon Islands National University (SINU) has taken a bold step in banning the sale and consumption of betel nut in its campuses in Honiara.

A notice from the university’s senior management committee recently circulated confirmed the ban effective as of the 30th July 2018.

“This is to inform all students and staff that sale and consumption of betel nut is banned on SINU campuses with immediate effect,’’ according to the committee.

“Chewing of betel nut is not permitted in SINU buildings, classrooms, corridors or grounds except in few secluded or designated areas around the campuses.’’

The committee further stressed, their security staff have been directed to monitor and implement the directive.

It said, failure to comply can result to severe warning.

“Any violation of this notice may attract stern warning and or spot fine,’’ according to the notice.
