Forestry officers undergo drone training

Staff of the Ministry of Forestry and Research have their morale raised with training on how to operate and fly drone as of yesterday.

This is made possible under the Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA) project under the Sustainable Forest Resources Management (SFRM) Project.

Highlighting the importance of the training Permanent Secretary Dr Vaeno Vigulu said this is another milestone achievement that will certainly help compliment the works of forestry officers.

“This will enhance the work of officers in many ways – in terms of monitoring and assessment which at times is time consuming and may be difficult to cover in a short period of time given.

“More so on the complicated challenges and issues like identifying of land boundaries involving disputes.

“With this training it can help address these through using of drone especially out in the field; to prove accurate and relevant information including mapping.”

He noted that this should also be a caution to those operating in the forest industry to be mindful of their actions.

“We have come across issues that companies tend to breach regulations at certain point but have acted ignorantly.

“We will be keeping a close eye this time around, making sure those implicated and tend to neglect the Ministry of Forestry and Research instructions to face the full force of the law,” emphasised the Permanent Secretary.

“With boosting of our staff on the drone I am confident that we will leave no stone turn.”
