A 16 year-old male accused of being part of a group of people who caused disturbances in Honiara after the election of prime minister last month is released on bail.

The juvenile who cannot be named to protect his identity was released on a cash bail of $500 with strict bail conditions.

His surety also entered a principle bail of $500.

His lawyer, Lazarus Waroka of Public Solicitor’s Office made the bail application before Principal Magistrate Fatima Taeburi on Tuesday.

Police Prosecutor Watson Akwai did not object to the bail application.

The juvenile is due in court again on May 23.

So far nine alleged rioters were released on bail including this juvenile.

They were among the 63 people arrested and charged in relation to the alleged rioting that occurred in Honiara on April 24.

This was after the election of the Prime Minister.

They are facing various charges of rioting and unlawful assembly including damages to properties and assets.

Some of the alleged rioters will appear in court on May 17 while others will face court on May 23.

After the election of the Prime Minister on April 24, a small group of people in Honiara took to the streets to cause violence.

The group threw rocks, looted shops including the Pacific Casino Hotel, damaged vehicles and some buildings and mounted road blocks.

A number of Police Officers, Correctional Service officers and Civilians were injured during the clashes in Honiara at that time.
