Acting Police Chief Mostyn Mangau has thanked the community’s assistance in sharing information with the police which led to the arrest of the two remaining prison escapees over the weekend.

Speaking to reporters at the commissioner’s weekly conference Acting Police commissioner Mostyn Mangau said police manage to arrest Frank Firimolea and Dilo Faiga with the assistance of the local community.

“Our community is appreciated for sharing information with the police,” Mr Mangau said.

“As acting commissioner, I thank the community for the confidence they have in Police Response Team (PRT) and provide that information to our police that leads to the arrest of the two escapees,” he added.

The PRT recaptured Firimolea and Faiga in a RAV4 vehicle along the Burns Creek main road on Saturday.

They were on their way to Burns Creek to visit relatives when PRT confronted them.

The driver of the RAV 4 including other people were also in the vehicle.

Mr. Mangau said the RAV4 is owned by a member of the public and is public transport.

He said police sent the two escapees back to the Rove Correctional Facility.

He also added that the driver and the two other persons were also taken to the police watch house at the Central Police Station.

When asked if the three persons are still at the watch house, Mr. Mangau said he does not have any information with him at the moment if they are still there.

Mr Mangau also cannot detail the charges likely to be laid against the driver and the two other people as it depends entirely on the outcome of the investigation.

Another convicted prison escapee Olo was the first to be recaptured in the early hours of 7 January 2020, at the LDA area, Betikama in East Honiara.

The trio escaped from the Correctional Facility at Rove on 15 December 2019.
