THE annual Easter Rotary Fun Run proposed for this year is now being canceled in light of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

The annual event normally takes place during Easter Monday where hundreds would join the mass race from Lawson Tama up towards the Kola-Ridge area and back through the Kukum highway to Lawson Tama.

Each year most families and companies normally register to sign up.

This year many Honiara residents are looking forward to the event next month.

However, given the threat posed by COVID-19 the main organiser Rotary Club of Honiara has decided to call off the event.

In announcing the cancellation Keithie Saunders Rotary Press secretary said; “it is with regret that the Annual Rotary Fun Run, that takes place each year on Easter Monday has been canceled.”

She said usually, the fun run attracts between 5-6,000 enthusiastic runners and walkers.

Businesses sponsor and support large teams of competitors under their business logos, she added.

Prizes are also donated by business houses.

Saunders further elaborated that due to COVID-19 and an expected huge number of people who will participate its important to call off the event.

“Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, it is not appropriate for such a large group of people to congregate together and therefore have decided to cancel the Easter event,” she said.

Sharon Firisua won last year’s fun run for the female category.

Rotary is a service club where members work to assist the community in many ways, from distributing donations, sending sick babies for medical treatment, mentoring youth, building projects for schools and many more activities that benefit the community.
