Wini finishes eighth

04 August 2014

Solomon Islands only female weightlifter at the Commonwealth Games, Jenly Wini has ended her participation finishing at eighth place in the women’s 58kg category.

Wini managed to finish on eighth spot out of 14 competitors.

Despite not being able to win a medal at the Games, Ms Wini was happy with her final result.

“I am still happy because I competed with the best in the world and I finished in the top ten even though I did not qualify to win a medal.

“It’s a big learning experience for me as an athlete and as a coach,” she said.

Her participation has given her more encouragement to return and prepare well for future big sports events.

She said her goal is to win a medal in the big events such as the Commonwealth Games and Olympics and it is not yet the end of the road for her.

Wini will return home after the Games and will be engaged in a program to train young athletes who wish to take up weightlifting.

She said she is aiming to prepare athletes who will participate in next year’s Pacific Games in PNG.

Wini is being eyed by the weightlifting federation to assist in coaching the country’s national weightlifting team for PNG next year as she has also acquired her coaching diploma making her the first female coach for weightlifting in the Solomon Islands.

Meanwhile she calls on the Government to try and help Solomon Islands weightlifting by engaging a training space and proper facilities if Solomon Islands is to excel in the sport in the near future.

She said weightlifting has proved worthy of having proper training facilities and a training space as they have won many medals for the country in their recent outings.
