They flew out Saturday for Melanesia Cup

28 September 2014

DEFENDING Telekom S-league champions, Solomon Warriors FC, will represent the country in the newly revived Melanesian Super Cup competition in Vanuatu.

The club manageress Dianne Dettke confirmed their participation and said the team departed for Vanuatu last Saturday.

They will play their opening game against Vanuatu’s Tafea FC on Tuesday and Amicale FC on Saturday this week.

The Melanesian Super Cup is one of the region's oldest soccer competitions played among the Melanesian countries.

It will be played at the Port Vila Stadium and should feature champion clubs from Fiji, New Caledonia, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands and Vanuatu.

However, only three teams accepted the invitation while others were said to have withdrawn from competing.

Despite having only three teams participating, organizer and former Solomon Islands international, David Firisua said the competition will continue.

He believes bringing back the cup will fill a need for more competitions at an elite level.

“I am very happy to be here and I am sure that the fans here will enjoy the competition even though we have only three teams competing.”

“I thank OFC and VFF for their support and also thank Melanesian Spearhead Group (MSG) and the Vanuatu Government,” he added.
