18 May 2016

SUVA, (FIJI TIMES) - Twenty-four athletes have been selected to represent Fiji at the Oceania Weightlifting Championship scheduled to for May 24-28 at the Vodafone Arena, Suva.

The men's team need to finish in the top five and the women's in the top four to be able to select representatives for the Rio Olympics in August.

Weightlifting Fiji president and co-chairman of the 2016 Oceania Weightlifting Committee, Atma Maharaj, said 19 countries would be competing in the event.

Teams are expected to start arriving on Sunday.

"While New Caledonia will compete at the Oceania Championships, they will not be in contention for points for Rio qualifications because they come under the French Olympic Committee in the European Continental event.

"Fiji will also have strong representation in the Junior and Youth Championships, which will be run concurrently as part of the 2016 OWC," he said.

With each nation competing as a team, points distribution values first place at 28 points, second at 25 points, third at 23 and one less for each placing after the third.
