Fiji 7s team sets Rio target

11 August 2015

SUVA, (FIJI TIMES) - The Fiji National 7s side is keen on defending their World Sevens Series title but their focus will be projected towards procuring a gold medal at next year's Olympic Games.

National coach Ben Ryan said the focus will be on getting a gold medal at the Rio Olympic Games next year.

In a jovial mood Ryan requested Fijian fans to forgive him if the side lost their World Seven Series title next year for as long as the side get back a gold medal from the Rio Games.

"At the moment the boys are going through a phase of strengthening and we are keeping them where they live but do visit them in gyms within Suva, Nadi and Sigatoka," he said.

"We will be doing this for the next five weeks on a four day basis resting on Wednesdays," he said.

"Some of the players have been released from their work to play rugby but those that are not training or not contracted have returned to work."

Ryan said it was going to be quick once the 7s season started this December.

"The first week of August this year marked a year away from the games and we expect everything to revolve very fast from then on before the games begin on August," he said.

"We are working on getting our players time to get them bigger with strength and running fitness especially after returning from a very long season marked by a lot of celebrations.

"The boys may not be at an awesome shape at the moment but there is a plan around that and we just do not want to start early now or we will get them burnt out before the Olympics."

Ryan said the side's number one priority laid on winning gold at the Olympic Games.
