Vanuatu cricketers aiming to be well-prepared

26 August 2015

PORT VILA, (RNZI) - The Vanuatu men's cricket team are cramming in plenty of practice ahead of their bid for promotion from World Cricket League Six.

The Melanesian side came up short at the same stage two years ago, finishing third behind hosts Jersey and Nigeria.

They will face the Cayman Islands, Norway and Saudi Arabia in the pool stage of Cricket League 6 when the event begins in less than a fortnight.

The President of Vanuatu Cricket, Mark Stafford, says the national team is currently playing friendly matches in Australia before continuing their preparations in Europe later in the week.

"We have matches against the Netherlands A team in a few venues around Holland, plus one of their seniors clubs, which will give us really much-needed exposure to turf wickets. In Vanuatu we only had hard wickets to play on so we want to get some familiarity with the type of conditions we will face in the World Cricket League tournament in England".

Vanuatu have form on their side, having won gold at the Pacific Games, beating hosts Papua New Guinea three times in a row.
