It is a landmark, which no doubt will add not only to the changing landscape of our growing city but the country as a whole. For those who live in Honiara, there is nothing but amazement at the pace engineers from the People’s Republic of China have gone about their work in the last few days.
Pedestrians and motorists alike have witnessed tangible transformation of what was a few months ago, the site of the King George VI and Solomon Islands National University’s sports grounds.
That site is being transformed into a national stadium which no doubt will be the main feature of the 2023 Pacific Games. In a single day last weekend, the entre perimeter of the site was fenced off.
While work on the perimeter wall facing the main Kukum – King George VI Highway was going on, engineers worked quietly from inside.
It is truly amazing to see real discipline and dedication applied to work – something Solomon Islands people were once known for. Today, lack of discipline, commitment attitude to work and pure laziness has taken over. We need to reclaim what we’ve lost over the years.
Perhaps there is a lesson here for all of us to learn. We need to re-apply committing ourselves to the ideals of real work. Doing so is in line with the Biblical teaching that “by the sweat of thy brow, thou shall eat.”
It seems we have unknowingly allowed ourselves to fall behind the pack.
We owe it to the organizers of the Games, the Government of Solomon Islands and the People’s Republic of China, which has lent a hand to help us out in what could have been a dry run for the 2023 Games.
The Governments of the PRC and Solomon Islands deserve our congratulations for a job well done. This is just the beginning of greater things to come in terms of development.
