Honiara City Mayor Alfrence Fatai and his female co-accused have been fined a total of $3,000 on Monday at the Honiara Magistrates Court.
Failure to pay up the fine by close of business today will result in both of them serving two weeks in prison.
Fatai pleaded guilty to the charges of driving without a driver’s license, driving when under the influence of liquor and consuming liquor in a moving vehicle.
Deputy Chief Magistrate Shepherd Lapo imposed a fine of $1, 000 for the first charge, $2, 000 fine was imposed for the second charge and $500 fine for the third charge.
He then ordered the charges to run concurrently which means he will only pay a fine of $2, 000.
Another charge of attempted bribery will be mentioned in court on July 18.
He is yet to plea to the charge.
The mayor’s female co-accused had pleaded guilty to the charge of ‘drivers to be licensed’ and another count of ‘consuming liquor in a moving vehicle’ and was fined a total of $1, 000.
His lawyer yesterday made an application for a closed court to conceal the identity of the female, during the sentencing which was granted by the court.
Both accused were charged following an incident on May 25 along the Mamara road in Northwest Guadalcanal.
They were noticed speeding along the road by a police operation heading down the Northwest Guadalcanal and were then stopped.
Police then claimed the mayor allegedly tried to bribe an officer when he was taken to the Henderson Police Station following his arrest.
Private Lawyer Lazarus Kwaiga represented the mayor while Public Prosecutor Maito’o Hauirae appeared on behalf of his colleague Olivia Ratu for the State.
