A POLICE officer found guilty of causing the death of a girl in a road accident in 2011 will be sentenced, Monday (today).
Principal Magistrate Ricky Iomea deferred the sentence that was listed for Friday because he was yet to finalise it.
Rex U’upwe of Makira/Ulawa had been remanded in custody after his conviction and awaiting his sentence.
He was convicted of the charges of causing death by reckless & dangerous driving and endangering safety of person travelling by vehicle.
The accused was driving a white corolla car when it collided with a 1.5 ton truck at a sharp bend at Mamara road in West Guadalcanal on 2 March 2011 between 10am and 12noon.
The accused was driving heading west bound at the wrong lane of the road and ended up colliding with a pickup truck coming towards Honiara.
As a result of the accident, a female sitting at the back tray of the pickup truck was thrown out of the truck due to the impact of the hit, and died.
Henry Kausimae of Public Solicitor’s Office represented U’upwe while Public Prosecutor Willie Vaiyu appeared for the State.
