A total of 13 new sites have been commissioned under the Solomon Islands National Broadband Infrastructure Project (SINBIP).
This project comes under under the Ministry of Communication and Aviation (MCA) and Solomon Islands Tower Company Ltd(STL).
Most of the support comes from China and implemented by China Harbour Engineering Company Ltd, and Huawei.
The commissioning of 13 new sites marked a steady progress in expanding telecommunications coverage nationwide.
To date, a total of 100 sites have been successfully put into operation.
In Makira Province, key sites including M163 (Haneanaitoro), M164 (Rumahui), M165(Tawaraha), B166(Wugiroha), R181 (Tarakurukuru), as well as Waihaga, Maghe, and Maniwowo, have been connected to the national broadband network.
Meanwhile, in Malaita Province, sites M137 (Ro’ole), M140 (Darikwada), B141 (Aisina), R153 (Wairokai), and Ohararai have also been commissioned successfully.
During the implementation of these sites, construction in Malaita Province has been particularly demanding due to rugged terrain and limited accessibility.
Several sites are located far from roads and situated in high mountainous areas, making the transportation of equipment and materials extremely challenging.
The Ohararai site, in particular, highlights the scale of these difficulties. Even with strong support from local villagers, the team still took approximately four months to deliver construction materials to the site.
Despite these challenges, the project team has remained committed to timely delivery.
The successful commissioning of 100 sites marks a major milestone in improving national connectivity and bridging the digital divide.
As the project continues to advance, SINBIP is expected to play a vital role in enhancing access to communication services, education, healthcare, and economic opportunities across the Solomon Islands, particularly in remote and rural areas.
