Two local contractors have commenced essential road drainage maintenance and clean-up operations along the Honiara Main Highway.
They started operation in the past two weeks.
Niter Civil Construction is responsible for the stretch from Henderson Court to the Ranadi Roundabout.
SINBAD Construction is managing activities from the Ranadi Roundabout to the Honiara City Council junction.
These dedicated local teams can be seen actively working along the drainage ditches with open tipper trucks and light machinery, following their planned weekly maintenance schedule.
The Ministry of Infrastructure Development (MID) acknowledges the ongoing challenges in maintaining the city’s drainage system, which have been exacerbated by continuous heavy rainfall.
“Improper waste disposal practices into drains have contributed to blockages along the highway, with Kukum being a classic example.”
“We have made repeated calls to communities living upstream not to throw household waste into waterways during rainy weather to avoid blocking the drainage system on our roads,” MID’s Transport Infrastructure Management Team stated.
We would also like to clarify that the Tandai Highway section from White River to Central Market is currently undergoing construction as part of the Land and Maritime Connectivity Project (LMCP).
“Therefore, road drainage maintenance works for this west side highway will be under contract after completion of the project anticipated for next year.”
