THE Malaita Provincial Youth Council has officially established the Ward 24 Youth Council in West Are’Are, marking a significant milestone in its efforts to connect with rural youth across the province.
The formation of the new council is part of a wider initiative to strengthen grassroots engagement and empower young people in remote communities.
Malaita Provincial Youth Council President, Philip Subu, expressed his appreciation for being part of the historic event and highlighted the importance of building platforms for rural youth participation.
“The formation of ward-level youth councils is crucial in linking our young people with broader governance and development structures,” Mr. Subu said.
“Now, the Mareho Ward Youth Council has a direct connection to the Malaita Provincial Youth Council and even the National Youth Council.”
Prior to the establishment of the Ward 24 council, the Provincial Youth Council conducted a two-day training workshop for youths in West Are’Are.
The training focused on the structure and functions of youth organizations, aiming to prepare participants for effective leadership and community engagement.
Key topics covered during the sessions included:
-The Ward-to-Provincial Youth Structure;
-National, Pacific, and Commonwealth Youth Structures;
-The role of youth in Ward Development Committees and partnerships with Ward Support Officers; and
-Good Governance and Entrepreneurship
Mr. Subu noted that the training also encouraged youths to reconnect with their cultural heritage, work alongside tribal elders, and play an active role in the sustainable management of land and marine resources.
A part of the training was facilitated by Mr. Martin Hoasihere from the West Are’Are Rokotanikeni Association (WARA), who led sessions on good governance and entrepreneurship.
His contributions helped equip participants with practical skills and leadership tools.
Mr. Subu extended his gratitude to WARA for their logistical support and coordination, which were instrumental in the success of the event.
He also confirmed that similar youth empowerment workshops will continue next week in Tai Ward 25, scheduled for Monday and Tuesday.
