CHINESE Foreign Minister Wang Yi has assured China’s Pacific Island allies that China will always be a reliable and trustworthy partner of the Global South countries, and no matter how the world will change, it will always see PICs as “good friends, good partners and good brothers.”
Wang made the assurance in his statement at the conclusion of the 3rd China-PICs Meeting in Xiamen City in China’s Fujian Province on Wednesday 28 May.
He said the gathering of foreign ministers and representatives of the China-Pacific alliance for their third meeting was to renew the bond of friendship among their countries and plan for future cooperation, and this demonstrated the fact that friendship transcends oceans and continues uninterrupted.
“We will always be a reliable and trustworthy partner of Global South countries no matter how the world will change, China always sees the Pacific Island Countries as good friends, good partners and good brothers.
“This year is the 50th year since China begun establishing diplomatic relations with PICs over the past half century. China and PICs have always treated each other as equals, supported each other and extended a helping hand to each other.
“We help each other succeed and have promoted peace, stability and prosperity for our region. Together, we have set an example for peaceful co-existence between countries of different sizes, and set a model for solidarity for development among the Global South,” Wang emphasized.
Wang said amid the century’s defining transformations in the world, global risks and challenges have emerged, but despite this changing and turbulent situation, China as the biggest developing country remains steadfast in providing stability and prosperity for the world.

“We remain unwavering to be the builder of world peace, contributor to global development and upholder of international order. We firmly stand on the right side of international fairness and justice, right side of history, and the side of developing countries,” he emphatically added.
Wang highlighted that President Xi Jinping had put forward four principles of fully respecting the PICs, and these principles are the fundamental guidance for China’s relations with PICs.
“To elaborate on it, China fully respects the sovereignty and independence of PICs, fully respects the will of PICs, fully respects PICs national cultures and traditions, and fully respects PICs efforts to seek strength and unity,” he said.
Wang said in the principles and spirit of the 3rd China-PICs Foreign Ministers’ Meeting themed “Working Together in Solidarity for Common Development: Jointly Building a Community with Shared Future between China and Pacific Island Countries”, he and his PICs counterparts and representatives had in-depth exchange of views on issues of mutual interest, especially on how to further the China-PICs collaboration.
